Dear parents:
We wanted to apologize for the short notice as we searched for volunteers last week. Again, we really appreciated everyone coming together and helping us pull off a successful classic race, last Wednesday.
With that in mind, we wanted to pass along our volunteer needs for the remainder of the season:
January 20th, Sunday: Long classic practice (and course preview) at Black Mountain, Rumford. This will be an optional practice, providing an opportunity for athletes (particularly J2-aged athletes) to preview the Black Mountain course before the Sassi Memorial race, the following Saturday. We will review the course, talk about race strategy and practice technique. ATHLETES: WE NEED A COUNT on who intends to attend this practice, in order to make the necessary travel arrangements. We are looking to use a town vehicle, however, depending on numbers, we may need extra drivers (TBA by mid-week).
January 21st, Monday (MLK, Jr. Day): 4km skate relay at Starks Hill, Fryeburg. This will be a long day, therefore we are looking for parents to provide lunch foods for the skiers, following the race.
January 25th, Friday: We are looking for a family to host a pasta/waxing party. This will be essential in insuring that racers' skis are properly prepared for the Sassi (the following day). The home should have a heated waxing facility, and space for skiers and parents to share food.
January 26th, Saturday: 5km classic Sassi Memorial Race/J2 Qualification at Black Mountain, Rumford. This will be one of the largest races of the season. Additionally, it is a very important race for J2 skiers (14-15 yrs), serving as the qualification for the New England J2 Championships in March. We need 4+ volunteers for pre-race activities.
2+ Volunteers to assist with kick wax application. Glide and binder will be applied the night before, however, this will still leave 30 pairs of skis that require application of the day's kick wax. Joel and I will determine the magic wax combination of the day. We will start this application process, but will need 2 or more waxers to help finish the skis.
2+ Volunteers to assist with the athetes' race warm-up. As mentioned this is an extremely large event, which causes the course to be chaotic and overcrowded before the race. With this in mind, the athletes will need to bring sneakers and be prepared for a running warm up (except for injured/non-running athletes). We are looking for two active parents to help lead the athletes through a prepared warm-up (Joel and I will provide the warm-up).
Finally, we will need parents to provide lunch foods, following the race.
February 6th, Wednesday: Western Maine Conference Championships 5km skate at Libby Hill, Gray. Considering this will be a championship event we are looking for parents to provide snack foods, following the race.
February 9th, Saturday: Western Maine Conference Championships 5km classic at Starks Hill, Fryeburg. This will be a lengthier event than Wednesday's race, as it will include an awards ceremony. We are looking for parents to provide lunch foods, following the race.
Class C State Championships will be held at the Nordic Heritage Center, Presque Isle. The races will take place on February 18th, 19th, and 20th (with Nordic events taking place on the 18th and 19th). We encourage all available families to join us! However, since the awards ceremony will follow the last alpine event on Wednesday, all athletes are required to stay through Wednesday.
More information regarding this event and any volunteer needs will come in the future.
Thanks again for all of your continued support!
