Friday and Saturday (2/1 & 2/2) practice

We are keeping our fingers crossed for cooling temperatures! That said, our plans for the coming two days are:

Friday - 8am bus departure for Pineland. The folks in the ski shop sounded optimistic that they would be opening tomorrow (hinging upon cooling overnight temperatures). We will practice for 2.5 hours tomorrow, finishing by 11am. We will SKATE ski (except for those who can only classic, in which case waxless skis are recommended). Bring your sneakers, in case the access loop does not re-open, and we do dryland.
If you will not be riding the bus, please email us tonight.

Saturday - 8am bus departure for Black Mountain (1st choice) or Sugarloaf (2nd choice). We will not know until tomorrow whether Black Mtn. will be open on Saturday. Regardless of location we will have a time trial (hopefully classic, assuming places can set a track). Return time will depend upon the destination. More information to come tomorrow.

Thank you to all of the skiers and their parents for remaining flexible!

Friday and Saturday (2/1 & 2/2) practices

We are planning to TRAVEL to better snow on both Friday and Saturday.

We realize that the lack of snow and training options has become frustrating for everyone. Additionally, we are quickly heading into our season championships. With this in mind, we have decided to travel to venues with better snow conditions both Friday and Saturday. We will decide on the location later in the week, as the decision will be dependent on how venues fair through the anticipated rain. Options, as of now, include Stark's Hill, Waterville, and Black Mountain. We will have a bus for transportation on both days.

Regardless of destination, the bus will depart FHS at 8 am BOTH days! This will allow us to get in a quality practice and return to Freeport in good time. Please make your weekend plans accordingly.

RACE TUESDAY 1/29

CHANGE OF SCHEDULE: WE WILL HAVE A SKATE RACE ON TUESDAY, 1/29, AT PINELAND!

Wednesday's race has been moved forward, to Tuesday, in an effort to avoid the forecasted rain. The race will now be a SKATE SPRINT race, held in wave format. The race will begin at 3:30 pm. Athletes will be dismissed early, for a 2 pm bus departure. DO NOT BE LATE!

Parents are welcome to come. However, Pineland has requested that NO PARENTS WALK OR SKI on the course, due to the sparse snow cover. That said, as it is a sprint race, there should be ample spectating from the center/parking lot.

Skiers: Wax your skate skis tonight (with blue or purple wax). Make sure to scrape and brush them BEFORE you leave for Pineland tomorrow! Also, it is essential that they are brushed out well. Remember to bring lots of extra dry clothes for tomorrow (pre- and post-race). Finally, if you have multiple pairs of skate skis, I would suggest waxing and bringing BOTH your race and rock skis.

See everyone tomorrow!

Sassi Course review

As for the course map: if you open that document ( http://www.chisholmskiclub.org/images/trail_maps/2011-12/Pauls-5K.jpg )
Remember the 5 "sections" that we broke the course into last Sunday.

The 1st section (the 'Downhill' section) ends at the "10C" on the map. It will be very important to warm up well before the start of this race, as the first 1.5km is downhill. So your body will need to be warm BEFORE you start!

The 2nd section (the 'Transitions' section) ends at 3km. It is vital to keep your concentration on this part of the course, always preparing for the next downhill/uphill - to ensure that you have the most speed possible going into either.

The 3rd section (the "Strong" section) ends at "19". This is one of the most important sections of the race! Most of this section will be kick double pole/long striding. It is important to work hard throughout this entire section and to keep your technique in mind, ensuring that you make the best use possible of your kick wax.

The 4th section ("High School Hill") ends at "19A". Do NOT let High School Hill dictate your whole race, do not worry about the hill until you get there! Depending on Saturday's snow conditions the hill may require a lot of herring bone. Remember to keep the V of your skis as narrow as possible. Additionally, near the top of the hill make sure to take "best line" (keeping to the left of the trail, and the inside of the corner). When you get to the top of the hill push AS HARD AS YOU CAN over the top. Do NOT get into a tuck until you are going too fast to double pole.

The 5th section ("3 little hills") ends just past "19B". Remember to keep your technique in check here and use all remaining energy in this rolling section. The top of each little hill is a finish line to race towards. After the 3rd hill race across the top, to build as much speed as possible going into the final downhill into the stadium.

The end! :)

Friday 1/25 practice and Saturday's Sassi Memorial race

We are keeping our fingers crossed that Pineland will re-open tomorrow! Regardless, there WILL be practice tomorrow at 12:30 pm. This means that all skiers should bring gear for BOTH dryland or on-snow practice. You MUST be at practice tomorrow if you are planning to race on Saturday!

Saturday will be a very long day, which means that all skiers must come prepared with lots of clothing and food! The bus will leave FHS at 7:30 am SHARP! Everyone should plan on arriving by 7:20 am. After arriving at Black Mountain, the team will ski the course together, regardless of start times. We will use this time to talk about the course and appropriate strategies. Skiers should change their tops after this initial ski, to prevent spending hour(s) in a sweaty and cold top. I suggest each skier brings 3+ skiing tops (plus their race top), to ensure staying dry and warm. In addition, skiers must bring SNEAKERS, in the case of a partial running warm up.

Skiers should also bring healthy and substantial (high carbohydrate) snacks with them, as well as full water bottles. Since skiers will not be racing until late morning/early afternoon they will need to eat again after breakfast. Good snacks include: bagels, bread, fruit (especially bananas), dried fruit, good quality energy bars (such as Cliff, etc.). Boys should plan to eat something around 8 to 9am (depending on their personal start time). Girls should plan to eat something around 10 to 11am (depending on their personal start time).

Skiers need to remember to MARK their kick zones, on the sides of their skis. In addition, they must mark their NAME on their race skis (this can be done with tape on the top of the ski). Unmarked and unnamed skis WILL NOT be waxed on race day.

Finally, you can see an online copy of the course map for Saturday. http://www.chisholmskiclub.org/images/trail_maps/2011-12/Pauls-5K.jpg

See everyone tomorrow, good luck in your final exams!

Tuesday 1/22 practice

Practice will be ON YOUR OWN today!

Pineland is CLOSED. They are planning to blow snow tonight and will hope to re-open tomorrow.

After finishing exams today, get out for a short EASY jog (30-45 minutes), followed by strength circuits. The strength circuits should mimic what we have done in the past, including:
push ups
pull ups (if you can access a bar)
squat jumps
lunge jumps
planks (front and side)
double pole/single stick with elastic band (if you can access one)
step ups
box jumps
burpees
chair dips
crunches, crunches and more crunches

If you find some snow around town, or in your back yard, you could replace the jog with an hour of easy skiing.

Pineland plans to re-open tomorrow.

See you on Wednesday!

Stark's Hill Relay race / practice this week

Congratulations to the Freeport nordic ski team for a good job today at the relay.
I would like to thank all of you for being on time, warming up and racing well today. I was impressed at how you all worked on improving your technique pushing yourself to be more efficient in order to be a faster skier. I saw a lot of V2 and V2 alternate and some very good downhill technique.

We have practice this week Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and then the Sassi classic race Saturday.
We know you have misterms this week so that takes priority over anything else. Please let Heather and I know the day before if you have to miss practice due to exams.
We currently have practice at the same time, 2:30 bus to Pineland. I left Craig Sickles a message to see if we have to have it at the same time or if it can be changed to an earlier time.

Right now plan on a 2:30 bus for Tuesday's practice and we will post a note on this site tonight or early tomorrow morning  if we to change it.

Let Heather and I know if you are nervouse about having enough study time for exams and maybe we can work something out.

Again, congratulations on a good job at the race today.
