States review
Freeport Skiers Excel Again
Once again the Freeport High School boys' and girls' ski teams have proven themselves champions. The girls took first place overall as the 2013 Combined Alpine/Nordic champions, and the boys took second place in the Combined Alpine/Nordic events.
The Class C State Alpine championship races took place at Mars Hill, at Big Rock Mountain where the Freeport boys’ alpine team took second place in the combined GS and slalom events, and the girls took third place in the combined GS/slalom events. Sophomore Ryder Bennell took the Class C Giant Slalom title, followed by Sophomore Blake Enrico placing second, Caleb Abbott 6th place and Brady Davis 10th. On the girl’s side, Taylor Enrico took 4th in the GS and Wynne Cushing placed 6th.

Slalom for Girls: Enrico and Cushing 9th.All these top ten finishers have been invited to the MPA state shootout competition March 3, 2013 at Black Mountain for the Eastern Championship qualifier.
The Class C State Nordicchampionship races were held at Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle, where both the girls and boys teams took second place in combined classical and skate events. Results as follows:
Boys Freestyle: Freshmen Forrest McCurdy placed 5th. Girls Freestyle: Sophomore Elizabeth Martin placed 3rd, Nina Moore 9th, and Bethanie Knighton on 10th. Classic race: Elijah McCurdy 8th, Forrest McCurdy 9th, and Mason Cyr 10th. Girls: Elizabeth Martin 4th, Lily Johnston 6th, and Nina Moore 10th.
Our exemplary coaches includedJay Thomas (Alpine), Joel Hinshaw (Nordic), Heather Zimmerman (Nordic Assistant) and Doug Martin (Nordic Assistant).
Most of all, the Freeport ski teams have historically been recognized for their high level of sportsmanship. They have proven themselves to have team spirit and to exhibit consistent sportsmanship in winning and defeat and always supportive and cheering competitors. Team parent Michelle Allott reports that the athletes have always been taught “It is not the medal around their neck or the trophy in their hands, but the team in their heart that they will remember for years to come”.

A year ago, Freeport won the Class C girls' skiing state title on the strength of on Alpine team that won consecutive state crowns. Graduation and transfers took a toll on the Falcons this winter, as Freeport slipped to third in Alpine. Senior Taylor Enrico and sophomore Wynne Cushing led the way with top 10 finishes in both slalom and giant slalom.Still, the Falcons won their second straight overall title thanks to a much-improved Nordic contingent led by sophomore Lizzy Martin, who placed third in skate and fourth in classic.
"They kind of carried us last year," said junior Bethanie Knighton of Freeport's Alpine team, "so it felt good that we were able to pull through this year and give them a comfortable lead."
Knighton was 10th in skate and 12th in classic. The other Nordic scorers were all freshmen: Nina Moore placed ninth in skate and 10th in classic, Lily Johnston was sixth in classic, and Fiona Ahearne was 12th in skate.
Freeport won the overall title, 195-268, over Alpine champion Fort Kent largely due to the 129-point cushion the Falcons forged in Nordic, whose title was won by their neighbors in New Gloucester, Merriconeag, the Waldorf school with grades 1 through 8 located in Freeport.
"We have a lot of connections," Knighton said. "Some of the girls on our team went to Merriconeag, so we all talk and know each other."
After the Nordic races were complete, kids from both schools returned to the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle for night skiing.
"It was really pretty in Presque Isle," said Knighton, of her first trip to Aroostook County.
Freeport's boys fell four points short of Fort Kent for the overall title, 153-157.

Congratulations!
Congratulations to the entire FHS Nordic Ski team on a fantastic season!
The past few days in Presque Isle provided the perfect finale to a great season!
Many of you have expressed an interest in competing in the Eastern High School Qualification race. The race will be held on Saturday, March 2 at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center. We need to know who is planning on attending this event, so as to arrange the necessary support. The race is a pursuit (a 5km classic in the morning, followed by a 5km skate in the afternoon), which will take the entire day.
Please email us as soon as possible if you plan on attending this race!
We encourage all of our skiers to continue getting out on the snow, while it lasts. Pineland's website says that they will have all trails open again by tomorrow (Thursday), however I would call before going. Considering it is vacation week, perhaps skiers can arrange to travel north towards better conditions (options COULD include Waterville Quarry Road trails, Black Mountain, Jackson NH, Great Glen, and Sugarloaf. However, I would always call before making a trip!)
For those wishing to continue their race season and attend the EHS qualification race, here is a training schedule:
Thursday: easy ski or off day (depending on how tired you feel). If you ski, go out for an easy hour ski. If you get out with a few friends end the ski with a game! :)
Friday: easy distance ski (practice pursuit style skiing by combining classic and skate). Go out for a slow 2 hour ski (ski classic for the first hour and then switch to skate for the second hour). Include 2 X 5 minutes of no pole skiing in each discipline.
Saturday: Classic Endurance SPEED workout - 5 X 5 minutes at race pace with 3 minutes between each interval. These intervals should not only raise your heart rate, but should also aim to improve efficiency, especially on climbs and transitions. Finish with 10 short (10 second) sprints (five striding and five double poling). If you are skiing somewhere with tricky classic waxing conditions it is best to go EARLY when the snow is still cold and waxing is easier!
Sunday: long, easy ski (practice pursuit style skiing by combining classic and skate). Go out for a slow 3 hour ski (ski classic for the first 1 1/2 hour and then switch to skate for the second 1 1/2 hour). Include 2 X 5 minutes of no pole skiing in each discipline. Finish each 1 1/2 hour section with 5 short sprints.
Monday: Off!
We will send out a schedule by next Monday (2/25) outlining next week's practices. All practices next week are optional and will require your own transportation.

A few reminders for the coming days, plus packing suggestions for Presque Isle
Friday, 2/15: OFF day for the entire team. Take the time to recover from a week of studies and prepare for the weekend/coming week. That said, Friday afternoon presents a wonderful opportunity for CLEANING YOUR SKIS! Everyone's skis MUST be clean BEFORE practice on Saturday morning. This includes cleaning the kick zone, sidewalls and tops of your skis. Tomorrow evening we are having a team pasta party at the Brainard's home.
Saturday, 2/16: We will meet at Pineland at 9am for CLASSIC practice! We will ski for 2 hours and then wax/clean skis for an additional hour. Therefore, skiers should plan to be picked up at 12pm. This practice is mandatory and you MUST email us if you will be missing it.
State team members will depart from FHS at 7am on Sunday morning.
The following is a list of things to bring to Presque Isle:
1. Skate and classic race skis
2. Skate and classic rock skis, used for pre-race warm ups. If you do not have a second pair of skis then you need to talk to your family, friends and fellow teammates, to see if someone has a pair that you can borrow.
3. Skate and classic poles
4. Skate and classic boots
5. Running sneakers
6. HATS (ladies, you need to bring hats with you, in addition to headbands)
7. Large WARM jacket to wear over warm ups (before/after races)
8. A large water bottle or 2 smaller bottles
9. Sunglasses and Sun cream
10. Race suits and warm-ups
11. At least 3 pairs of long-underwear tops and bottoms (to ensure that you always have a dry pair)
12. Post-race clothes (make sure that you bring dry clothes with you to the Nordic Heritage Center. This will allow you to change into warm, dry clothes after practicing/racing. Most days we will spend long periods of time at the NHC (either cheering on teammates or waxing skis), so you must be comfortable.
